Britain's parliament has approved a bill that will ban individuals born after January 1, 2009, from ever legally purchasing cigarettes. This legislation, aimed at creating the first smoke-free generation, intends to protect young people from a lifetime of addiction and harm.
Health minister Wes Streeting hailed the move as "historic" for national health. The new law will also grant the government powers to expand indoor smoking bans to outdoor public spaces like playgrounds and school perimeters. Additionally, it enables restrictions on vape flavors and packaging and prohibits vaping in existing no-smoking areas.
The bill supports a broader strategy to enhance preventative health measures and reduce the burden on the UK's National Health Service (NHS). Smoking contributes to approximately 75,000 deaths annually in England, accounting for a quarter of all fatalities.
