LONDON: The number of meningitis cases under investigation in the UK has risen to 20, with two deaths reported, according to the Health Security Agency. The outbreak, centered on the University of Kent, has hospitalized several students.
Meningitis, which affects the membranes around the brain and spinal cord, is most prevalent in young people. The current cases include six instances of group B meningococcal disease, a rare and more dangerous strain.
Health Minister Wes Streeting warned that the infection can spread through close contact, such as kissing or sharing vapes and drinks. A baby in Folkestone was also diagnosed with group B meningococcus, though not connected to the outbreak.
