A Quebec coroner is advocating for increased mental health support and resources for individuals applying for medical assistance in dying (MAID). This recommendation follows the case of a 91-year-old Montreal-area man who died by suicide after his MAID request was denied because he did not have a serious and incurable illness.

The coroner, Julie-Kim Godin, noted in her report that the man had a history of discussing grief, aging, and suicidal thoughts with medical professionals. Despite repeated requests for help, a previous suicide attempt, and his MAID application, no structured support plan was implemented. He died by suicide months after his request was refused.

Coroner Godin is recommending that Quebec ensure all individuals expressing a desire for MAID have access to adequate support for their physical, psychological, psychosocial, and spiritual needs.
