Ontario's Southeast Public Health unit is warning residents in the Kingston area of an uptick in gastrointestinal illnesses, commonly known as stomach flu. Approximately 90% of cases are caused by norovirus, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada.

Common symptoms include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, fever, and lethargy. The virus is highly contagious, and public health units across Ontario urge precautions.
Ottawa Public Health has reported 11 gastrointestinal outbreak in institutions this year, with one confirmed as norovirus.
Health officials stress that hand sanitizer is ineffective against stomach illnesses; thorough handwashing is the best defense. Staying home for 48 hours after diarrhea stops is also recommended. Seek medical care if symptoms last more than 48 hours.
