Saskatoon’s complex needs facility has diverted thousands from police cells and ERs since opening in 2024. Police now bring intoxicated individuals to the government-run site for up to 24-hour medical supervision, rather than jail or hospital.

Once on site, nurses perform assessments with doctors on call. Workers connect clients to detox, treatment, and housing. Many return multiple times, which staff view as opportunities to build trust.

Since August 2024, the facility has assisted nearly 4,000 patients. Nearly all accepted transportation to follow-up services. Police Sgt. Michael Horvath says such facilities are better suited for those in crisis than jail cells.
