A second American humanitarian worker has contracted Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo's ongoing outbreak. The patient is being treated in Germany, not the United States.
This follows a consistent policy under the current administration. The US has implemented strict travel restrictions and is blocking the repatriation of citizens exposed to the virus, even though the country has multiple biocontainment units designed for such cases.
The DRC outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo strain, is the third largest on record. As of mid-July, it has caused over 1,900 cases and 700 deaths.
The US has also largely stepped back from the international response, including moving to withdraw from the World Health Organization. The WHO is coordinating the outbreak response and provided initial care to the infected American before the transfer.
