The world must accelerate its response to the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, UN Relief Chief Tom Fletcher warned. He stated the virus is spreading from Ituri to other provinces due to conflict and displacement.

Since mid-May, the Bundibugyo species has infected over 1,700 people and killed 600 in the DRC. Uganda has confirmed 20 cases. Fletcher said the crisis is compounded by conflict, hunger, and weak healthcare.

"This is more than a public health emergency," he stated.

The UN released up to $60 million in May to boost the response. The World Health Organization is working with the UN peacekeeping mission, MONUSCO, to supply medical equipment and build treatment units. The UN has also deployed Senior Ebola Coordinator Julien Harneis.

"We know how to stop Ebola and we're implementing our strategy," Fletcher said.

However, conflict-related closures and travel restrictions disrupt humanitarian operations. Fletcher called for all parties to ensure safe access for health workers and supplies.

He emphasized that surveillance, testing, and community engagement are the best defenses against the virus.

"Any delay will be measured in Ebola deaths," Fletcher warned.
