A groundbreaking study from the Medical College of Georgia and Emory University shows that a simple, 5-minute educational video can dramatically improve melanoma awareness and early detection in underserved populations.

The prospective study, conducted at a regional cancer center in Albany, Georgia, enrolled 201 participants. They watched a video covering melanoma risk factors, the ABCDE detection criteria, sun protection, and self-skin examination (SSE) techniques, written at a fifth-grade reading level.

Results were striking: Knowledge scores jumped from 3.2 to 7.5 out of 10 immediately after, and remained elevated at 6.7 three months later. Confidence in identifying suspicious lesions rose from 21.4% to 96%, staying at 84.8% at follow-up.

Crucially, the intervention helped close the gap for minority and rural populations, who saw the greatest improvements. The findings suggest that low-cost, scalable tools can empower patients to detect melanoma earlier, potentially saving lives.
