Alex Cora, recently fired as manager of the Boston Red Sox, reportedly declined an offer to manage the Philadelphia Phillies just days later. Cora opted to spend time with his family instead. The Phillies then appointed bench coach Don Mattingly as interim manager.
The Red Sox dismissed Cora along with five other staff members following a 10-17 start to the season. Cora previously managed the Red Sox for eight seasons, winning the World Series in 2018. His tenure ended with a 620-541 record.
The Phillies also recently fired manager Rob Thomson after a 9-19 start. Don Mattingly brings extensive managerial experience, having led the Los Angeles Dodgers and Miami Marlins. He holds a career record of 889-950 over 12 seasons.
