Two Chinese American stars, Alysa Liu and Eileen Gu, found themselves at the center of an Olympic narrative, juxtaposing national loyalty and geopolitical tensions.
Liu, after securing a historic Olympic figure skating gold for the U.S., carried the narrative of an immigrant's child who fled communism. This story quickly drew comparisons to Eileen Gu, an American-born skier competing for Team China.

Both Liu and Gu share roots in the Bay Area, born to single parents who emigrated from China. Liu's father, Arthur Liu, a Tiananmen Square protest survivor, risked imprisonment to flee China and later raised Alysa in Oakland. Gu's mother, Yan Gu, a Peking University graduate, also came to the U.S., raising Eileen in San Francisco.
China's "naturalization project" actively recruited athletes with Chinese heritage, particularly in America, for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. Gu switched her allegiance from the U.S. to China in 2019, citing inspiration for young people and promoting understanding between nations. She has since become one of the highest-paid Winter Olympic athletes.

The contrast intensified as Gu faced global criticism for her silence on China's alleged human rights abuses, stating she hadn't "done the research" and it wasn't her "business." Conversely, Liu and her father were reportedly targeted by a Chinese government spying operation ahead of the Beijing Games, seeking to intimidate them.
Liu, supported by the FBI and U.S. State Department, continued to compete, eventually retiring and then making a significant comeback. Her journey culminated in a historic gold medal win, solidifying her narrative of American loyalty.

As Gu competes in her final events, the shadow of Liu's success and the ongoing geopolitical discourse continue to frame the narrative, with social media amplifying politically charged comparisons. Gu has spoken of being a "punching bag" and enduring threats due to her choices, while Liu's resilience amid the spying incident highlights a starkly different experience rooted in American support.
