AC Milan has fired head coach Massimiliano Allegri and CEO Giorgio Furlani after a dramatic late-season collapse cost the club a Champions League berth. The club's U.S. owner, RedBird, called the campaign an "unequivocal failure" in a statement Monday.
The Rossoneri missed out on a top-four finish by a single point after losing 2-1 at home to lowly Cagliari on the final day of the Serie A season. Milan had spent much of the season in the top two but won just two of its last eight matches, prompting a furious response from fans who booed the team off the field.
RedBird's statement announced the immediate departure of Allegri, Furlani, sporting director Igli Tare, and technical director Geoffrey Moncada. The club has only retained special adviser Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Managing partner Gerry Cardinale is expected to work with Ibrahimovic on a comprehensive restructuring, including the hiring of a new coach, CEO, and sporting director.
Allegri's conservative tactics drew heavy criticism during the collapse, with key attackers-including USMNT star Christian Pulisic, who finished with 8 goals and 4 assists-starved of service.
