BUENOS AIRES - Lionel Messi's words echoed through Buenos Aires Cathedral Thursday as Archbishop Jorge García Cuerva quoted Argentina's captain during a Mass marking Independence Day.

The Archbishop used Messi's message after the team's 2022 World Cup triumph as a call for unity. "When we Argentines fight together and stand united, we are capable of achieving whatever we set our minds to," García Cuerva read from Messi's social media post.

President Javier Milei attended the ceremony. The national team prepares for a World Cup quarter-final against Switzerland following a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Egypt.

Messi, playing in his sixth World Cup, leads the tournament with eight goals across five matches.
