New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has entered the global football debate, publicly declaring that Egypt was "robbed" during its 3-2 loss to Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16.
The former amateur footballer made the remarks at a public event, stating he would use time freed by city improvements to rewatch the disallowed goal.
The controversy centers on a goal by Mostafa Zico. After a VAR review, referee Francois Letexier ruled it out, citing a foul by Marawan Attia on Lisandro Martínez during the build-up. The decision erased what would have been a 3-0 lead for Egypt. Argentina subsequently mounted a comeback to win.
Analysts at TSN described the foul call as "too soft." Egypt's head coach, Hossam Hassan, also questioned the officiating.
Mamdani's comments highlight how sporting injustices often become political talking points, particularly given New York City's significant Egyptian diaspora. His framing links the sporting grievance with his administration's focus on local infrastructure.
