SEVILLE, Spain - American coach Pellegrino Matarazzo arrived at Real Sociedad in late December with the team near the relegation zone. Now, four months later, the Basque club is contending for European spots and preparing for the Copa del Rey final against Atletico Madrid.

The team's dramatic turnaround has spawned a new phrase: "Matarazzed." Coined by a commentator, the term signifies when La Real outwits or outplays opponents, reflecting Matarazzo's daring, attacking style. Even Matarazzo has embraced the nickname "Rino," fostering unity and trust with supporters.

Matarazzo, born near Manhattan, previously coached in Germany, notably as an assistant to Julian Nagelsmann at Hoffenheim and as head coach for VfB Stuttgart, guiding them to Bundesliga promotion. After a pundit role, he now has a chance at silverware with Real Sociedad.

"I'm very optimistic; I think we have a chance. I really believe in it," Matarazzo stated after a recent draw, as the club chases its fourth Spanish Cup.
