Alysa Liu captured Olympic gold at the 2026 Milan Cortina Games, ending a 24-year drought for the United States in women's figure skating. The 20-year-old’s free skate centered on the theme of joy, a sentiment she expressed wholeheartedly after her performance.

Liu explained her approach was to share her story and creative process, emphasizing that even mistakes are part of the narrative. "There’s no way to lose," she stated, embracing a mindset that allowed her to skate freely.
She focused on engaging the audience, particularly those in the upper tiers, and showcasing her new gold dress. "I was also focused on engaging with the audience. In between my transitions... I really took a moment to smile at them, give them a little shoulder. Engage with the crowd, and I did just that."

Liu's final score of 226.79, including a season-best 150.20 in the free skate, secured her victory. She became the first American woman to medal in singles figure skating since Sasha Cohen in 2006, and the first to win gold since Sarah Hughes in 2002.

Prior to her individual win, Liu also contributed to the U.S. team's gold medal victory.
