SEATTLE - Belgium mounted the greatest late comeback in World Cup history, erasing a two-goal deficit to defeat Senegal 3-2 and secure a spot in the Round of 16.

Senegal took command with strikes from Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr, appearing poised for their first knockout stage victory since their 2002 debut.

Romelu Lukaku ignited the Belgian fightback in the 86th minute before Youri Tielemans forced extra time with a stoppage-time header. The drama peaked in the 125th minute when Tielemans converted a penalty following a VAR review, breaking a record for the latest goal in tournament history.

The result saves the last dance for Belgium’s golden generation, keeping hopes alive for veterans like Kevin De Bruyne and Lukaku.

Sarr had earlier hit the post before Diarra pounced on the rebound to put Senegal ahead. The Crystal Palace forward doubled the lead by chesting down a long pass and rifling a finish past Thibaut Courtois early in the second half.

With Belgium seemingly heading home, Lukaku swept home a cross to halve the deficit. Moments later, Tielemans outmuscled two defenders to nod into an empty net. The comeback was completed when the Aston Villa midfielder held his nerve from the spot, sending Belgium through.
