SAO PAULO - Brazilian basketball icon Oscar Schmidt has died at age 68, his press office announced. Schmidt, a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame, had a distinguished 30-year professional career in Brazil and Europe.

Schmidt was renowned as one of history's greatest three-point shooters. He holds records for the most points scored in Olympic tournament history with 1,093 and the most points in a single Olympic Games with 55.

He famously led Brazil to a victory over the U.S. in the 1987 Pan American Games final. His exceptional shooting accuracy earned him the nickname "Holy Hand."
