EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey - Neymar has strongly suggested he may have played his final match for Brazil. The star forward scored a stoppage-time penalty in a 2-1 World Cup round-of-16 loss to Norway on Sunday, a result that eliminated the five-time champions.
After the match, an emotional Neymar told Brazilian broadcaster Globo, "I tried, I tried ... Now it's over! I started here, I finished here." He was referring to the New Jersey stadium where he made his international debut in 2010.
The defeat marks Brazil's worst World Cup performance since 1990. The nation now faces its longest title drought, having last won the trophy in 2002. By 2030, it will be 28 years without a championship.
If Neymar confirms his retirement, he ends his Brazil career with 80 goals and 58 assists in 130 appearances. His only major senior trophy with the national team is the 2013 Confederations Cup.
