Ohio State safety Caleb Downs, poised for the NFL Draft, draws inspiration from his family's football legacy and, significantly, his grandfather, a 23-year U.S. Army veteran.
Downs, whose father Gary played in the NFL and whose brother Josh is a Colts receiver, emphasized his grandfather's teachings. "Everything my grandfather instilled in us -- consistency, discipline, hard work -- that’s why we’re here today," Downs stated, reflecting on his partnership with USAA.
He learned about his grandfather's mindset as a "jumpmaster" and veteran, realizing the deep impact of his discipline on the family. "The way he led his family... has been passed down to his son, my dad, and hopefully someday it’ll be passed down to myself."
Downs also seeks advice from his brother Josh on adjusting to the pro level. "The biggest thing he told me was find your routine, find your habits. Those are the things that are going to make the biggest difference."
Anticipating potential matchups with his brother, Caleb recalled a high school game where Josh's team secured a decisive victory. "I’ll have to get my get-back because he beat us pretty bad my freshman year."
Downs also participated in a meaningful USAA event, visiting a Disabled American Veterans chapter to hear stories from service members, further connecting with his grandfather's military background.
