William Davis, a football player for the Sam Houston State Bearkats who previously played for West Virginia and Virginia Union, died from a gunshot wound to the chest, according to the Virginia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. It is unclear whether the death is a homicide, and the manner of death remains pending.

Sam Houston State head coach Phil Longo issued a statement mourning the loss, calling Davis a beloved member of the Bearkat family who touched lives with his upbeat, positive spirit.

Davis began his college career at Virginia Union, recording five interceptions and one touchdown over 19 games. After the 2024 season, he transferred to West Virginia and appeared in one game. He earned a Master of Science in sports management from West Virginia in 2025 and was competing for a roster spot at Sam Houston State.

Davis, 22, described Sam Houston as home and praised the opportunity to learn from coach Dovonte Edwards, a former NFL player. Further details on the incident are awaited as the investigation continues.
