William Davis, a 22-year-old defensive back for the Sam Houston State Bearkats, has died. Head coach Phil Longo confirmed the death on Sunday, calling Davis a beloved member of the football family and an upbeat, positive young man.

Davis began his college career at Virginia Union, playing 19 games with five interceptions and a touchdown. He transferred to West Virginia after the 2024 season, appearing in one game for the Mountaineers, and graduated in 2025 with a master's degree in sports management. He had recently transferred to Sam Houston State for the upcoming season.

The cause of death has not been announced.
