WINNIPEG - In a season marked by inconsistency, Kyle Connor has emerged as Winnipeg’s most reliable force.
The Jets’ star winger set a franchise record Saturday with his eighth 30-goal season, surpassing Ilya Kovalchuk in a 3-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche at Canada Life Centre. The victory bolstered Winnipeg’s fading playoff hopes.
Connor scored the game’s opening goal early in the second period, finishing a play initiated by Mark Scheifele, who tallied his 50th and 51st assists of the season. The chemistry between Connor and Scheifele remains a cornerstone of Winnipeg’s offense.
Jets head coach Scott Arniel praised Connor’s elite scoring instincts. “He’s a pure goal-scorer,” Arniel said. “I don’t know if everybody around North America recognizes how good he is.”
Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, who made 28 saves, called it an honor to witness Connor’s evolution. “I’ve seen the skills develop… how much faster he’s getting every single day,” Hellebuyck said.
Connor, deflecting praise, credited health and teammates like Scheifele, Blake Wheeler, and Josh Morrissey. Over nine seasons, his only sub-30-goal output came during the pandemic-shortened 2020-21 campaign, when he still scored 26.
The Jets improved to 27-28-10 but remain behind several teams in the playoff race. Arniel emphasized collective effort: “Everybody has got to be doing this. If you’re not all in, you’re not going to have success.”
