Canada prepares to face Qatar at BC Place in Vancouver, seeking the nation’s first-ever men’s FIFA World Cup victory. This matchup marks Canada’s second game of the 2026 tournament and the second held at the Vancouver stadium.

Both teams enter this contest with one point in Group B following identical 1-1 draws in their openers. Canada earned its historic first point against Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 12, while Qatar matched Switzerland the following day. With all four group nations tied, securing a top-two finish is critical for automatic advancement to the knockout stages.

Head Coach Jesse Marsch has emphasized the need for greater aggression after his team failed to convert nine first-half corner kicks in their opener. Despite recording 61 percent possession against Bosnia, Canada struggled with tentativeness early on. Marsch highlighted improved mentality and bravery in the second half as key takeaways moving forward.

Historical data favors Canada, which defeated Qatar 2-0 in a September 2022 friendly thanks to goals from Cyle Larin and Jonathan David. However, defensive vulnerabilities remain a concern; Canada has conceded the opening goal in six of seven World Cup matches. Larin’s 79th-minute equalizer against Bosnia marked only the second time the team has recovered from an early deficit.

Marsch also faces a roster decision regarding captain Alphonso Davies, who remains sidelined with a hamstring injury but has not been ruled out of the tournament. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET Thursday.
