President Donald Trump announced plans to issue a new executive order within a week aimed at addressing the escalating costs and complexities of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals in college sports. Speaking at a White House event, Trump emphasized that while his order would be more comprehensive than previous efforts, Congress ultimately needs to provide legislative solutions.

The soaring value of NIL contracts, particularly for football players, is creating a significant financial burden for colleges, leading some to cut other sports. Trump stated, "We have to save college sports." He acknowledged that a return to the previous system, where scholarships were the sole compensation, is not feasible.

House Speaker Mike Johnson indicated that legislation establishing a national NIL standard is nearing passage in the House of Representatives. However, expressing doubt about congressional action, Trump intends to test the legality of his executive order through the court system. Former coach Nick Saban called for effective revenue sharing and rules to address extended athlete eligibility, while House Majority Leader Steve Scalise proposed limiting athlete transfers and playing years.
