Playing second base, hitting lefty, throwing righty - it’s what people named Chase Utley seem destined to do.

The younger Chase Utley, born in Alabama in 2009, was named after the Philadelphia Phillies legend who helped lead the team to a World Series title that same year. His parents, Brian and Amanda, each came to the name differently - Brian as a devoted baseball fan, Amanda independently drawn to the name.

Despite initial hesitation, Amanda warmed to the idea after learning the older Utley was a respected figure and potential Hall of Famer. “He’s an awesome guy… a great role model,” she said.

Like his namesake, the younger Utley bats left, throws right, and plays middle infield. He also pitches and is scouted by Perfect Game as a potential Division I college recruit.

His father, Brian, coached him from a young age. “He kind of molded me into the player I am today,” the teen said.

Scouts praise his versatility and athleticism. “He swings from the correct side of the plate, and he does hit,” said Jered Goodwin, vice president of scouting at Perfect Game.

At tournaments, confusion reigns when umpires mistake Brian for the famous Chase Utley. The teen himself often faces questions about whether he's named after the MLB star.

The Utleys support the Kansas City Royals but root for the Phillies too - their son’s second-favorite team. Plans are in motion for the two Chase Utleys to meet soon.

“I’d love to shake his hand and have a good conversation,” said the elder Utley.
