Francesco Bagnaia snatched pole position from teammate Marc Marquez at the French MotoGP in Le Mans on Saturday, denying the Spaniard a seemingly certain pole after he shattered the circuit's lap record.

Bagnaia, the reigning world champion, clocked 1:29.634 in Q2, edging out Marquez in the dying moments of qualifying. Marquez had set the benchmark earlier with a blistering 1:29.288, breaking the circuit's lap record.

"I hope things are starting to click," Bagnaia said. "Keep calm, feet on the ground, and work like we are doing."

Marquez's path to the front row was fraught with difficulty. Forced through Q1 after failing to advance directly to Q2, he initially found himself outside the top two and in danger of missing qualifying. But his response was emphatic: a scorching lap so blistering that Ducati team manager Davide Tardozzi shook his hand like he had touched something hot.

"I'm in a moment that I don't understand many things," Marquez admitted. "But when I have this extra adrenaline, I can do it because I know how to be fast on a bike."

Both Ducati riders will aim to convert their front-row lockout into race success, after dominating the sprint in Jerez but failing to finish Sunday's race. Aprilia's Marco Bezzecchi joins them on the front row in third.
