MILAN, Feb 21: The Netherlands concluded the Winter Games short track events as the top nation on the medals table, while Italy's Arianna Fontana etched her name in the record books, achieving her 14th career Olympic medal.
Fontana, 35, reached finals in all five of her events, securing mixed relay gold and silver in the 500 meters and women's relay for Italy. Her 14-medal haul now surpasses fencer Edoardo Mangiarotti's record, making her Italy's most decorated Olympian.
Despite a setback in the mixed relay, the Dutch team demonstrated exceptional performance in their strongest showing to date in short track. They accumulated seven medals overall, including five golds.
Jens van 't Wout, 24, earned three golds and a bronze. His brother, Melle van 't Wout, claimed a surprise 500 meters silver on his 26th birthday, overcoming a previous knee injury. Compatriot Xandra Velzeboer secured gold in the women's 500 meters, setting a world record in the semi-final, and also won the 1,000 meters.
South Korea's Kim Gil-li, a first-time Olympian at 21, led her nation with two golds and a bronze, contributing to their seven-medal total. Canada's Courtney Sarault earned two silvers and two bronzes across four events, and Steven Dubois captured his first individual Olympic gold in the 500 meters.
