Morocco's dramatic penalty shootout victory over the Netherlands at the World Cup triggered jubilant celebrations and subsequent clashes with police in The Hague.

The last-32 match in Monterrey ended 1-1 after extra time. PSV Eindhoven forward Ismael Saibari scored the decisive penalty, sending Morocco to the last 16 to face co-host Canada.

The Hague, home to one of the Netherlands' largest Moroccan communities, erupted in celebration. Around 32,000 residents of Moroccan descent live in the city.

In the Schilderswijk district, supporters draped in Moroccan flags filled the streets, setting off fireworks and celebrating with motorists.

About an hour into the festivities, riot police intervened to disperse the crowd, using water cannon and baton charges. Approximately a dozen arrests were made.

Dutch police reported officers were attacked during the disturbances, with riot squads deployed after being pelted with stones.
