FIFA and the 2026 World Cup New York New Jersey Host Committee have announced a "Regional Stadium Mobility Plan" for games at MetLife Stadium, aiming for a successful fan experience despite potential $150 train fares. The plan, developed with transportation partners, prioritizes safety and security.
Host Committee CEO Alex Lasry stated the plan is "built with safety and responsibility at its core," promising a "clear, reliable experience for matchgoers." However, New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill has publicly clashed with FIFA over transportation costs, pointing out that FIFA is providing no funding, leaving NJ Transit with a significant bill.
Governor Sherrill urged FIFA to cover the fan transportation costs, emphasizing fairness to New Jersey commuters. FIFA responded with surprise, noting that they are not aware of similar financial obligations for transportation at past major events held in the region.
MetLife Stadium will host eight World Cup matches, including the final on July 19. NJ Transit advises that travel will differ from usual, recommending avoidance of nonessential travel on match days and noting service disruptions from New York Penn Station to New Jersey four hours before game times.
