Coco Gauff, a two-time major champion, was forced to retire from her third-round match at Indian Wells on Sunday due to persistent pain in her left elbow.
Gauff, 21, took a medical timeout before the final game and apologized to her opponent, Alex Eala, for withdrawing while trailing 6-2, 2-0.
This marks a rare retirement for the world number four, who was aiming for her first title in the California desert. The retirement advances Eala to the round of 16.
