Geoffrey Boycott has slammed the England and Wales Cricket Board for a lack of accountability after retaining head coach Brendon McCullum and managing director Rob Key following the team’s 4-1 Ashes loss in Australia.
The former England opener called Key "incompetent" and accused him and McCullum of sabotaging the tour with repeated poor decisions. He questioned ECB Chief Executive Richard Gould’s judgment, asking, "Where is the accountability?"
Boycott praised McCullum’s aggressive style but warned it bred complacency, with players feeling secure regardless of performance. "It looks like a boys’ club," he said, emphasizing that competition drives excellence.
Former captains Michael Vaughan and Mike Atherton echoed the sentiment, calling the survival of the coaching staff "lucky." Atherton noted fans would find the lack of consequences hard to accept, especially given the scale of on-field failures.
