Anthony Gordon scored four goals in the first half as Newcastle United secured a commanding 6-1 victory over Qarabag in their Champions League playoff first leg. The win puts the Premier League side on the verge of advancing to the last 16.
Gordon opened the scoring in the third minute. Malick Thiaw extended the lead with a header from a corner just six minutes later. The 24-year-old Englishman then converted a penalty in the 32nd minute after a handball, followed by another goal a minute later due to a defensive error. He completed his first-half blitz by scoring a penalty in added time.
Qarabag found a consolation goal in the 56th minute through Elvin Jafarguliyev. However, substitute Jacob Murphy's deflected shot in the 72nd minute sealed Newcastle's emphatic win in Baku.
