Paris St Germain retained the Champions League trophy with a gritty penalty shootout victory over Arsenal, equaling the competition record for goals in a season.

A year after demolishing Inter Milan 5-0 with attacking flair, PSG found another way to win despite falling behind to an early Kai Havertz goal. The Arsenal defense, which had conceded only six goals en route to the final, smothered PSG's attacking threats throughout a frustrating first half.

PSG showed patience, completing 837 passes to Arsenal's 199 with over 70 percent possession. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia drew a penalty from Cristhian Mosquera in the second half, which Ousmane Dembele converted to level the match at 1-1.

After a scrappy extra time, PSG prevailed 4-3 in the shootout after Arsenal defender Gabriel blazed his spot kick over the bar. The victory marked PSG's 45th goal of the campaign, equaling Barcelona's 1999-2000 record.

Coach Luis Enrique called the final "a real battle" and praised his team's resilience. PSG became only the second club after Real Madrid to retain the European Cup in the Champions League era.
