Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe stated on Friday that his team is experiencing a significant confidence crisis following a recent string of defeats. The struggling Premier League club, currently 14th in the standings, has lost their last four matches across all competitions, jeopardizing their chances of European qualification.
"We've lost a little bit of confidence, I think that was clear against Bournemouth on Saturday. With the recent results we've had and just the way things have fallen against us, players aren't playing to their maximum level. You can see that," Howe told reporters. He emphasized his focus on supporting the players to help them return to their best individual and collective levels.
Adding to the team's challenges, forward Anthony Gordon, who has scored 17 goals this season, will miss the upcoming match against title contenders Arsenal due to a hip injury. Howe confirmed the injury is "not serious" but prevents Gordon from playing.
Howe also addressed the situation with record signing Nick Woltemade, explaining the striker's absence from recent starting lineups despite full fitness, citing the productivity of other forwards like Gordon and Will Osula.
Looking ahead, Howe warned of significant squad changes in the summer if performances do not improve, stating, "If the team is not performing then there will be bigger changes in the summer than previously. You have to react to what you see."
