Francesco Fortunato of Italy has shattered the world indoor 5,000 metres race walk record. Competing at the Italian Indoor Championships on Saturday, Fortunato clocked an impressive 17 minutes 54.48 seconds. This performance significantly surpasses the previous record of 18:07.08, held since 1995 by Russia's Mikhail Shchennikov.
Fortunato, 31, expressed his satisfaction after overcoming a previous technical judging issue that invalidated a faster time last year. He stated, "I came here to try again and I didn't give up. After the disappointment last year, I felt this was a record I deserved."
