Bosnia captain Edin Dzeko downplayed controversy over Italian players celebrating Bosnia’s victory against Wales, suggesting Italy is feeling pressure ahead of their World Cup playoff clash.
Italy advanced past Northern Ireland, and footage showed Inter Milan's Federico Dimarco and others cheering Bosnia's penalty shootout win. Some Bosnian supporters saw it as disrespectful.
"What happened is something completely normal," Dzeko said. "Dimarco messaged me and said he didn't want to offend anyone. There's absolutely no problem."
Italy faces the threat of missing a third straight World Cup. Dzeko suggested their recent struggles point to deeper issues.
"If they're afraid of playing in Wales or Bosnia, it means something isn't working," he added.
No Italian clubs reached the Champions League quarterfinals this season, signaling broader challenges in Italian football. Dzeko, who has played for Inter, Roma, and Fiorentina, said the national team’s media often criticizes the domestic game for lacking intensity.
He expects a cautious, tactical showdown in Tuesday's playoff in Zenica.
Dzeko, 40, remains a key figure for Bosnia, having scored in every year since his debut in 2007. He netted the equalizer against Wales, extending his longevity record.
"As long as I feel good and can help, I'll be here," he said. Currently playing in Germany’s second division with Schalke 04, Dzeko shows no signs of retirement.
