IndyCar has pulled a T-shirt from its online store after some fans objected to language they said could be interpreted as white-supremacist.

The shirt, produced to promote the August Freedom 250 race, shows Abraham Lincoln wearing a racing helmet, with the slogan: ONE NATION above, ONE RACE below.

Some felt the words carried a racist double-entendre. Social media erupted with criticism.

IndyCar said in a statement: "A shirt was removed from IndyCar's online store following feedback from customers. We understand that some individuals found its phrasing concerning and therefore have remedied the situation."

The race has a patriotic theme tied to the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence-an event President Donald Trump has championed.

IndyCar racers will speed past Washington landmarks, including the Lincoln Memorial, which appears to have inspired the T-shirt's image. Lincoln led the Union during the Civil War, which ended slavery in the U.S.
