Two Iranian women's soccer players, Fatemeh Pasandideh and Atefeh Ramezanisadeh, have been granted asylum in Australia and were photographed training with the Brisbane Roar on March 16, 2026. The appearance marks their first public activity since opting to remain in Australia.
The players were part of a contingent offered asylum while en route back to Iran after an international tournament. Seven team members chose to stay; at least five later returned home. The Brisbane Roar confirmed they are providing a supportive environment during the transition.
Brisbane Roar CEO Kaz Patafta stated the club is committed to supporting the athletes. The move follows international attention, including from former President Donald Trump, urging Australia to protect the players.
Iranian officials dismissed concerns for their safety, labeling some as 'wartime traitors,' but reaffirmed that all citizens are welcome to return. The rest of the team continued travel through Kuala Lumpur to Oman.
