Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk delivered a dramatic stoppage-time header to secure a 2-1 Premier League victory over rivals Everton on Sunday, significantly boosting the team's European qualification prospects.

The win, achieved in the first Merseyside derby at Everton's Hill Dickinson Stadium, propelled Liverpool to fifth in the league standings with five games remaining. They now sit seven points clear of sixth-placed Chelsea, a critical advantage as five Premier League clubs are set to earn Champions League berths next season.

Mohamed Salah opened the scoring for Liverpool in the 29th minute, capitalizing on a defensive error from Everton. He calmly finished past goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Everton responded early in the second half with a close-range goal from Beto, leveling the score.

However, Van Dijk's late header from a corner ultimately snatched all three points for the visitors.

"We have to keep fighting, keep going and make the best out of this poor season we're having," stated Van Dijk post-match. "That's the reality, onto the next."

Liverpool now holds 55 points, trailing third-placed Aston Villa by three points. Everton remains in 10th place with 47 points.

In other Premier League action, Nottingham Forest moved five points clear of the relegation zone thanks to a 4-1 comeback win over Burnley, inspired by Morgan Gibbs-White's 15-minute hat-trick. Aston Villa maintained their Champions League push as Tammy Abraham scored a 94th-minute winner in a thrilling 4-3 victory over Sunderland.
