A silver medal from the first modern Olympic Games in Athens, 1896, has sold at auction for nearly four times its estimated value. The historic piece fetched DKK 1,152,000 (approximately $181,323) including fees at Bruun Rasmussen Arts Auctioneers.
The medal, designed by French artist Jules-Clement Chaplain, depicts Zeus and Nike on one side, and the Acropolis and Parthenon with a Greek inscription on the reverse.
The 1896 Games brought together 241 athletes from 14 nations. While the auction house noted Denmark's Viggo Jensen won the country's first Olympic weightlifting title, it remains unconfirmed if this medal was awarded for that specific event.
