AUGUSTA, Georgia - Golf icons Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player have publicly voiced their support for Tiger Woods, who is absent from this year's Masters tournament. Woods is undergoing treatment following a car accident and a driving under the influence charge, to which he has pleaded not guilty.

Nicklaus, after teeing off for the ceremonial first shot, expressed a desire for Woods' return, stating, "Golf needs him."

Player acknowledged the immense pain Woods has endured due to multiple surgeries, stating, "Do I blame him for taking medicine? Hell, no. He has sleep deprivation. Do I blame him for taking something to help him sleep? No." Player advised Woods to avoid driving himself, suggesting a chauffeur. He added, "My heart goes out for him. There's nothing worse than living in pain every day of your life."

Player also highlighted Woods' profound impact on golf, particularly for Black athletes. He recalled a time when Black golfers faced exclusion, noting how Woods revolutionized opportunities and perception within the sport globally. "What he does for the Black man around the world, you can never work out what he's done for golf," Player stated.
