Amidst ongoing scrutiny of American-born skier Eileen Gu's choice to represent China in the Olympics, two fellow U.S. athletes have spoken out in her defense.
Team USA skeleton athlete Kelly Curtis stated she has respect for Gu's talent and accomplishments, noting, "She is the most decorated freestyle skier... I have nothing but respect for her."
AJ Edelman, captain of the Israeli bobsled team and a U.S. citizen, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that each athlete's journey is personal. "Every single athlete has a different athletic journey, and every single athlete chooses a path in their life... that is there's and there's alone," Edelman told Fox News Digital. He added that it is "incredibly inappropriate for anyone to demand service of someone in sport for any particular reason that is not of that athlete's own will."
Edelman, who made significant financial sacrifices to compete for Israel, compared Gu's situation to his own decision to represent another country, stating, "Any athlete is free to choose the athletic path that they take, and I'm going to respect that."
Gu has become a prominent figure, reportedly earning millions through partnerships with Chinese and Western companies. She has previously stated her decision to represent China is for her mother, who was born there. Gu has also faced criticism for her response to questions regarding China's alleged human rights abuses, stating it is "irresponsible to ask me to be the mouthpiece for any agenda."
Gu has described feeling like a "punching bag" amid the backlash, suggesting that criticism is amplified due to geopolitical tensions and her success. She has also recounted experiencing threats and personal security issues.
