A jersey worn by Brazilian soccer legend Pelé in the 1958 World Cup final has sold for $4.9 million, according to auction house Sotheby's.
Pelé, who passed away in 2022, was just 17 when he scored twice in Brazil's 5-2 victory over Sweden. He remains the youngest player to score in a World Cup final.
The sale sets a new benchmark for Pelé memorabilia. Sotheby's confirmed the shirt is now the second-most valuable soccer jersey ever sold, following Diego Maradona's "Hand of God" shirt which fetched $9.3 million in 2022.
Pelé, born Edson Arantes do Nascimento, gifted the handmade jersey to his teammate and roommate, Dida, after the match. The shirt remained with Dida's family for decades before being held by a Brazilian museum and later acquired in 2004.
