MILAN - The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) will permit Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete at the Winter Paralympics under their national flags and with anthems. IPC President Andrew Parsons announced the decision, which was made by the IPC General Assembly.
The IPC's allocation of combined slots for Russian and Belarusian athletes has ignited controversy, given the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Parsons stated the decision is final and cannot be overturned.
In response, Ukraine has announced a boycott of the Milano Cortina Paralympics opening ceremony on March 6. The Czech Paralympic Committee and some Polish officials have also indicated they will not attend in solidarity with Ukraine.
Parsons expressed hope for Ukrainian athletes' participation, emphasizing a message of inclusion and diversity, while also stating the IPC respects any decision not to attend. He noted no official communication regarding further withdrawals had been received.
Russia maintains that politics should not interfere with sports and finds the targeting of disabled athletes offensive. Russia has been allocated spots in Para Alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, and snowboarding, while Belarus received slots in cross-country skiing.
The Italian government has publicly disagreed with the IPC's decision and urged a reversal. The IPC is engaged in dialogue with the host nation to mitigate the impact of differing viewpoints and ensure a supportive environment for all athletes.
The Winter Paralympics are scheduled to take place from March 6 to March 15.
