The Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds took an early lead in their Western Conference quarterfinal series, defeating the London Knights 4-1 on Tuesday at Canada Life Place.
Marco Mignosa led the charge with a goal and two assists. The game’s opening goal was scored by Jaxon Cover just 34 seconds into the match. Despite an initial 1-0 lead by London, Sault Ste. Marie quickly tied and took the lead with goals from Jeremy Martin and Lukas Fischer.
Mignosa also netted the only goal of the second period on a power play. Jeremy Martin added his second goal in the third, sealing the 4-1 victory.
London’s defense faced challenges, including the early exit of Caleb Mitchell after a hit by Jordan Charron. Knights forward Jesse Nurmi also missed the game due to injury.
Sault Ste. Marie outshot London 25-24 and capitalized on two of their four power play opportunities. The Knights failed to convert on their three power play chances.
Game 2 is scheduled for Sunday, March 29, at 6 p.m. at Canada Life Place.
