Singapore has opened a new national esports training center at GR.iD mall, marking a significant step in its ambitions for the sport. The 600 sqm facility features over 100 gaming stations and a 150-seat competition arena. This development follows the recent parliamentary recognition of gaming as a sport, updating Sport Singapore's mandate to support a wider range of athletic pursuits.

The center, operated by the Singapore Esports Association (SGEA), is set to anchor preparations for the upcoming Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, where esports will be a medal event. Former professional gamer Benedict "Benkai" Tan, 29, expressed that while the facility's arrival is late for his own career, it presents a vital opportunity for emerging talents, making esports a more viable career path.

SGEA president Ng Chong Geng stated that the association is actively working with coaches to select and prepare players for specific titles at the Asian Games. This includes open qualifiers and tailored training programs for winning teams. The SGEA also plans to identify and nurture young talent through boot camps.

Looking further ahead, Singapore is preparing to host the 2029 SEA Games. The SGEA is collaborating with regional partners to standardize game titles for the event, allowing for more focused athlete training. The association emphasizes the importance of early preparation, identifying games where Singaporean players have a strong chance of success to build the best possible teams. Beyond competitive performance, the SGEA aims to foster greater community support through events and watch parties.
