HERNING, Denmark, March 19 : Nottingham Forest advanced to the Europa League quarter-finals with a 3-0 penalty shootout victory over Midtjylland after the teams finished 2-2 on aggregate following extra time.
Midtjylland took a 1-0 first-leg lead at a rain-soaked City Ground through Cho Gue-sung’s late header. Forest responded with a 2-1 win on Thursday, with goals from Nicolas Dominguez and Ryan Yates sending the match to penalties.
Dominguez opened the scoring four minutes before halftime with a looping header into the bottom corner. Yates doubled the lead in the 52nd minute with a left-footed strike from the edge of the penalty area.
Midtjylland equalized in the 69th minute as Martin Erlic capitalized on a loose ball to level the tie on aggregate. A scoreless extra time period led to a decisive penalty shootout.
In the shootout, Midtjylland missed all three of their spot-kicks, while Morgan Gibbs-White, Ibrahim Sangare and Neco Williams scored to send Forest into the quarter-finals.
Elsewhere, Celta Vigo eliminated Olympique Lyonnais with a 3-1 aggregate win, and Freiburg advanced with a 5-1 home victory over Genk.
