Spain has won its second FIFA World Cup, defeating Argentina 1-0 in extra time at New York/New Jersey Stadium.
The winning goal came from substitute Ferran Torres in the 106th minute. His powerful shot from inside the box beat goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, who had been outstanding throughout the match.
The final was a tense, tactical affair. Argentina played the final 30 minutes plus extra time with ten men after midfielder Enzo Fernández received a red card in the 93rd minute.
Spain dominated possession and chances, registering 20 shots but failing to score during regular time due to Martínez's heroics. Argentina managed no shots on goal.
This is Spain's second World Cup championship, following their first in 2010. For Argentine captain Lionel Messi, the defeat marks a painful end to a potential final World Cup appearance.
