Stefanos Tsitsipas experienced another first-round defeat in Munich, a result underscoring his departure from tennis's elite. The former world number three lost to Fabian Marozsan, 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-4. This loss is projected to drop his ranking into the 70s, its lowest point in eight years.
Tsitsipas opted for Munich over his usual Barcelona stop. He acknowledges the increased difficulty of facing top players in early tournament rounds as his ranking declines. "I'm aware that I might need to play good players in earlier rounds at different tournaments this year," he stated. "It's not an easy thing to get to play them early, but I also accept the challenge and I accept my current position and state, that these things need to happen in order for me to get back to where I belong."
Despite early promise and reaching Grand Slam finals in 2021 and 2023, Tsitsipas has struggled to maintain consistent form. A back injury impacted his 2025 season. While his stated goal for this year was to regain competitiveness, his only significant run was reaching the Doha quarter-finals.
His professionalism has faced scrutiny. Former coach Goran Ivanisevic described him as an "unprepared player" after a Wimbledon exit last year. Before Munich, Tsitsipas indicated a willingness to play more lower-tier ATP 250 events to rebuild rhythm. He plans to carefully select upcoming tournaments, emphasizing the need for matches to refine his game.
