Tottenham Hotspur non-executive chairman Peter Charrington has admitted that footballing success had taken a back seat in decision-making, as the club avoided relegation on the final day of the Premier League season for the second year in a row.
Spurs beat Everton 1-0 to finish 17th, narrowly escaping the drop for the first time since 1977 thanks to manager Roberto de Zerbi. While fans celebrated, they also directed chants and banners against the club hierarchy.
Charrington, who took over from Daniel Levy in September, wrote an open letter to supporters acknowledging deep failures.
"The qualities that make Spurs distinct had been allowed to fade," he wrote. "Football success had not been driving our decisions. We did not have the right expertise in key roles."
He promised a squad rebuild with the right blend of experience, youth, and leadership, and investment across multiple transfer windows starting this summer. Charrington also dismissed speculation about a sale, stating: "Tottenham Hotspur is not for sale. The Lewis family are wholly committed to this club."
